In the first half of 2024, the German video game market shrank for the first time in five years

According to a report by the German association GAME, the revenue of the German gaming market fell by 6% in the first six months of 2024. Experts note that this is the first decline in many years, which they attribute to the lack of major releases.
The GAME Association did not specify when the last time there was a decline in the German gaming market. It is worth noting that the association began tracking sales of games, gaming equipment and revenue from gaming services in Germany in 2019. Since then, it has regularly reported market growth. Thus, we can conclude that for at least five years, the German gaming market has shown stable growth.

  • The German gaming market earned €4.3 billion in the first half of 2024. More than half of this amount - 2.58 billion euros - came from game purchases and microtransactions in games, a drop of 4%.
  • Sales of consoles, game accessories and other hardware totaled €1.17 billion, down 18%.
  • At the same time, spending on online gaming services, including subscriptions such as Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, amounted to 516 million euros, showing an increase of 25%.
